Vinyl Flooring 101 – The Basics
Vinyl flooring is a great option for many homeowners who want to have a good and safe flooring at home without the added cost of a very expensive material. If you’ve heard of resilient flooring before, the vinyl flooring is the most common type and also the most popular one particularly in the US. Many times people actually use both terms as synonyms.
While you can find very expensive, high end vinyl flooring types, there are also low cost variants that are recommended if you have a tight budget. Of course, having a high end type can easily compete with hardwood in appearance and quality, however the low cost is a bit lower in both looks and durability.
Vinyl flooring is made of solid and composite vinyl. The solid one is made of vinyl pieces that are in a vinyl base, and the composite type is made of vinyl parts that are embedded in various non vinyl fillers. The solid variant is the most durable and expensive of the two and this is because it easily has the most vinyl components included in it.
There is a top protective layer called wear layer that is found in all vinyl floors to protect the lower layers from wear and tear. It can be a clear urethane without a wax covering, or entirely in vinyl. The second type is more durable and scratch resistant but it’s very easy to lose its gloss and shine over time, becoming matt and dull. Also there is the issue of slips and falls when it comes to glossy floors, especially in bathrooms.
The vinyl floors have usually a cushion backing in several thicknesses, depending on which one you buy. If you install the flooring in the kitchen, this is very useful to avoid things breaking if they ever fall on the floor. On the flip side, the bigger the cushion the easier is the flooring to dent so you might want to go with a textured style that easily hides the dents from being detectable at first glance.
When you are looking to buy your new flooring you will notice that it comes in two different types: sheet vinyl and tiles. If you like to install it on your own, it’s better if you get the tiles as they are easier and faster to install. Also if you ever have to replace a piece, it’s much easier to replace the damaged tile than having to replace the entire sheet.
The tiles have an adhesive backing that is very easy to peel off to stick on the floor the easy way. When you install it, however, make sure that the subfloor is smooth, without any bumps, so that the glue sticks to it without a hitch.
